How do you decide?

Depending on your life at this point in time, there are often choices of whether to spend a little more money for convenience -- thus saving time, or taking more time to do something -- thus saving money.

It's probably a daily conundrum for most of us, and there is never an easy answer. Even if you think you have found one, everything changes on you and you have to start over.

For us, as older adults, it means (probably) having a little more time to devote to doing things ourselves or taking the long way around town to find a bargain. It may even be fun to search out bargains and get the feeling that you won that particular battle.

It can even become a hobby of sorts. . . or not. One thing for sure, though, is that bragging about all the bargains you have taken advantage of probably won't win you any brownie points with the members of the younger generation who don't have that kind of time. So keeping your bargains to yourself may be the better play.
There's an odd thing going on this weekend, enough that it might mess with the space-time continuum, or at least with some people's plans. Friday is the 13th, a day considered unlucky by most, and Saturday is Valentine's Day, a day of love and declarations, many of which have to do with some degree of luck you could argue.

Opposites don't usually mix well, and I wondered how often this situation comes up. The trusty internet says that it has or will occur four times between 2001 and 2028. Years where the 13th is a Friday in February are 2004, 2009, 2015 and 2026.

So which will you focus on? As Baby Boomers, I am guessing most of our attention will be on the hearts and flowers holiday, rather than the darker one. We are a positive group for the most part, and this is just another way to show it.Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-92104560004138793472015-01-15T10:02:00.000-05:002015-01-15T10:02:28.256-05:00Start New Year off RightSay "Sure" More

My new favorite word is sure. When someone asks me to do something, I say "sure". Go somewhere with them? "Sure."

At the holidays, my younger son wanted to bake cookies. Now we had a lot going on in those few days and it was really hectic here, the kitchen was already a mess, but I said "sure, let's do it." Turned out to be great cookies too.

Now that certainly wasn't a world-changing decision, but I think as we get older it becomes easier and easier to say "no" to things. Things like driving into the nearby city, maybe taking in a show, going to a ballgame in a new-to-us stadium -- all in all stepping out of our comfort zones. I feel that Boomers have to be vigilant to not let "no" or "not this time" become our words of choice.

Being open to new things and easy going once you get there are hallmarks of younger people. Why should they have all the fun?

Do something new and challenging this winter. If someone asks you to do something, say "sure" and get ready to enjoy yourself.
A friend of mine wrote the following comment for my blog entry (seen below) where I talked about a nifty way to keep your belongings organized when traveling to several places on one trip. Just in case you missed that, here are her words describing how she uses Ziploc bags to keep her luggage neat, which often seems an impossible task. Not anymore!
I put all the underwear and socks for each stop in separate bags, label them by city and then just unpack each bag as I need it. I hate having my suitcase out and open in the hotel room so this lets me put just what I need in the drawers and leave the rest packed away for the next city.

Planning a short or long trip? Here's a quick tip to help keep your suitcase better organized.

Place your underwear, socks, scarves into large ziploc bags, one for each type of clothing. (I found two gallon-sized bags at a local box store, and these work well). Putting all of your socks in one bag and so on allows you to easily toss the bag into a drawer when you unpack or keep things neater when you have to live out of that suitcase for a while.

Also, with a quick glance, you can tell whether you have enough clean things to last the trip or if you have to drag out the Woolite or other soap you brought to rinse things out with.

(Note: I have had a lot of trouble keeping Woolite inside the small plastic jar I use to transport it in my suitcase. I am not sure why, but it always leaks. I put the jar inside a couple of ziploc bags but it still leaked inside them. Could have been a disaster, really. I know there are other products out there for hotel room laundry day so I might have to do some research).

Any suggestions?Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-11666186856927492522014-09-16T16:02:00.004-04:002014-09-16T16:02:41.501-04:00Bye, Bye Hummingbirds

I love fall, but there comes a day when I am really not happy that the season is starting. That's the day when I realize that my hummingbird visitors who have been coming to my deck for four months to feed have decided to head south for the winter. Today is September 16 and I am resigned to the fact that I will not see a hummingbird for the next eight months.

We had one female who came to the feeder all summer long after somehow dissuading a male hummer to back off. She has been gone for a while now I think. Even though I have seen a couple of birds this past week, I know they are travelers who are stopping by for a quick meal on their way from further north to the warmer south.

How these tiny puffs of color manage to fly from here to Central America and return to the same breeding grounds each year is beyond me.That's why it is such a miracle to see them in the spring. Can't wait.

If you are fortunate enough to have some tomatoes on the vine in your backyard, it's almost time to harvest them.

More than 43 million American households have food gardens, even though we have access at our local grocery stores to practically limitless produce.

A couple of years ago, I planted a small tomato plant on our deck (see above), as well as a green pepper plant and wrote about their progress as the fruit grew and matured. I ended up with three little tomatoes, I think, and no peppers. But at this moment I wish I had thought to put in another tomato plant -- or two.

I tried growing leafy lettuce in a pot last year and my son told me he didn't know that lettuce could taste that good!

I hope you enjoy your harvest this year, if you are lucky enough to have one. For myself, I will be visiting farmer's markets to buy local. Close but still not as neat as green growing plants on the deck.Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-66318354579587879032014-06-25T11:24:00.001-04:002014-06-25T11:24:19.943-04:00Be Careful of Ticks Out There

After the rough winter most of the country experienced this year, everyone is trying to spend as much time outside enjoying the warmer temps as they can.

Great idea, but some precautions are needed to make sure everyone is safe. (I know, when we were kids we just ran out the screen door and stayed out. Times have changed.)

Before you go for walks along hiking trails or in the deep woods, be sure to rub on lots of sun screen. And just as importantly, "Deet up" as my daughter-in-law says. We have gotten lots of bug bites this spring, not even realizing when we got them. Some had to come when we were sitting on our back deck during the early part of the day which is supposed to be "safe" from such things.

Ticks are out in force too, and with the large deer population we have nearby, something to take very seriously. My son's friend had a tick on him when he came back inside after a quick walk through the back yard. I heard of another woman who got Lyme disease without all of the "normal" symptoms you look for like a tick that was attached for some time or a bulls eye rash.

Be careful out there!

I overheard a friend talking about how peonies were a good garden choice these days because deer don't seem to eat them. I didn't pay too much attention as I have pretty much convinced myself that deer will eat ANYTHING.

But driving around the last few days I have noticed some lovely peony blossoms that seem to be thriving even in our heavy deer-populated neighborhoods.

We had rows of peonies lining a walkway when I was growing up. I remember how lovely they were till a high wind or rain storm knocked the tall blooms over. And ants. I remember how many ants we would find in the petals whenever we would cut a few flowers to bring in the house.

When we first moved to this house I planted several peony plants in the backyard, but none of them ever grew, apparently because of too much shade.

But if peonies are deer-proof or at least deer-putting off, I may have to reconsider and plant a mass of them in the front beds. I can't wait!
If Facebook is interested in something, you know it has to be big. Doing a little research for this month, May, which is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, I learned that Facebook has just purchased the app Moves, which tracks your movements for the day and gives you a report on your iphone.

A little more involved than a pedometer which just counts steps, Moves knows (magically) when you are at work or when you have stopped at other places during the day. A little scary actually, but it could be a good way to focus on fitness at the same time.

The app is free at the Apple App Store or Google Play on your iphone. To learn more about the sale of the app to Facebook, visit here.Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-69216931890019499572014-04-15T17:11:00.002-04:002014-04-15T17:11:30.114-04:00Remember: World Book Night April 23As I wrote in the blog post below (dated March 5, 2014), April 23 is World Book Night when avid readers hand new books to those who may not have ever had the pleasure of reading a book.

There is time to become part of this organization next year if you are intersted. To learn more, visit World Book Night.

Seems to me that a lot of experts on fitness are promoting simple ways to move more during the day, any way you can. It doesn't have to be a marathon; just move more and more each day. This will contribute to your health in more ways than you can imagine.

Discussing this recently, I began telling a few people about Geocaching, a modern day treasure hunt that has you walking and hiking to find caches which include trinkets and other goodies. You log in your finds on the Geocaching website and can view your progress. It's a hobby you can do at home or when away, pretty much anywhere in the world.

We were avid geocachers for a while and still try to find some caches when we travel to different states. But I think it may be time to incorporate geocaching back into our lives in a bigger way.

To learn more, visit the Geocaching website. It really is fun and you do find yourself forgetting that you are exercising because your brain thinks you are on a treasure hunt. Much cooler by far.
In the middle of a drab, cold February, my book club met at a local restaurant and decided that instead of talking about one book selection we would allow each member to talk about her favorite book.

It was a lovely evening, a bright spot in a dark month for sure, and the highlight was hearing each person talk with such passion about a particular book, but more about her love of reading.

The reading bug had hit most of us early in life, and continues to this day into our senior years.

To encourage this love of reading in others who may not have had the opportunity to pour through books as a child, World Book Night was created. The program allows volunteers (avid readers I am sure) to place a particular book in the hands of light or non-readers on April 23, 2014.

The program continues through the year, and new volunteers will be solicited for the 2015 event.

This winter across the entire country has been a huge advertisement for Yaktrax, The product is a system of stretchy metal coils you attach to your shoes or boots so you can stay upright on snow and ice.

I have had a pair for years, but of course, was not wearing them last year when I fell on black ice on my driveway. Smart, eh? But this year they are a constant accessory to my winter garb.

My set of Yaktrax are permanently attached to an old pair of sneakers and are definitely my footwear of choice when I am walking to the mailbox or to sweep off our front steps. I have not experienced even a slip so far. Now, I haven't sought out huge patches of glazed ice to try them out on either, but I have seen such patches and stayed as far away from them as I can.

There are different brands of these shoe add-ons and different styles. Yaktrax makes these items for walking, running and skiing.

I have to admit I was very leery of this winter because of my fall last year, but these products have given me back some of my confidence to go out and tackle winter. Thank you, Yakrax.

Be careful out there.

If you know Boomers, and I think you do, you will appreciate knowing that January 24 is Beer Can Appreciation Day.

Apparently, on January 24, 1935, the first beer was sold in a can. And no one has looked back since -- and no one has been able to verify this is indeed a fact. But that shouldn't stop beer lovers from hoisting a cold one to whoever made it much easier to fit beers in a basement refridegerator.
Every time I see Christmas decorations in a store, I make a little "hrrmph" sound to let whoever is in charge know that it's way too early for those displays.

Well, that's not exactly true. Thanksgiving could have been this week, and I think we have all been sort of expecting it to be. Turkey Day is late this year, and that means the holiday hullabaloo will have a shorter shelf life in general unless the stores start early.

It is after all past the mid-point of November which I can't believe. In my head it's still summer, although a bit chilly.

And with one less week between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is a mad scramble to get people out there buying, no matter what.

The "what" is that stores are now opening Thanksgiving night and making all of their employees push back from their dinner table to go to work. That doesn't seem fair. We could have waited a bit longer to begin the buying binge. We would have survived.

We had an opportunity last month to visit Seaside, FL, a beautiful town in the panhandle of Florida.

I wanted to see the town because it had been featured in an exhibit at the Carnegie International this year, near my home. This particular exhibit showed photographs of "social experiments", or ways that people tried to establish alternative lives to how "normal" people lived..

The Seaside photo featured the post office above, so I had to get a photo of it to share. The town was the dream of one man that was realized years later by his grandson. To learn more about this beautiful spot, visit here.Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-68725973172622959582013-10-23T16:59:00.001-04:002013-10-23T16:59:24.835-04:00Some Horses Gotta Run

These carousel horses at the Pittsburgh Zoo (PA) will soon be taking a long winter's break, even though the zoo is open all year. The sun was shining on the horses so brightly earlier this month that I couldn't resist taking a few shots.

I love any and all carousel horses. A long time ago my husband Larry bought me a beautiful carousel horse that was created out of fiberglass (I think) by a local artist.. This horse, which sits in our front hallway, probably elicits more comments from visitors to our house than any other possession we have.

This one is as close to a real horse as I guess I will come. When I was younger, my cousins and I prayed hard to own a horse. Didn't happen even though we had a barn and that made it a given to us.Our parents had other, more practical thoughts.

It would have been nice though.

My mother was a fanatic about writing in books she gave as gifts, something she taught my dad over the years. As you can see from this fairly poor (I apologize for the quality) photo, my mom wrote a note to me (signing Dad's name) in a $1.00 book which has retained its value for more than 50 years.

The inscription written on the flyleaf of Cherry Ames Student Nurse reads as follows:

To Teresa, from Daddy, (on the occasion of your) Tonsillectomy, July 2, 1960

I have several books inscribed by my mom her and each is a treasure. I try to follow in her footsteps by writing in books I give as gifts, but I know I am not nearly as devoted to it as she was.

I do remember the tonsillectomy very well, but with this inscription, I remember my mom and dad even more.Teri Flatleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07868858084810986144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3523020462549515017.post-84078048235307837662013-09-22T14:43:00.002-04:002013-09-22T17:25:00.759-04:00Macbeth and the TheaterLast night we went to a theater a little drive north of us to see the first program of the full season we had bought.

The theater, located at a community college, features shows by local singing talent, musical programs and plays. We decided to sign up for all of them since the cost for each was only about what a couple of lattes cost.

Our first show of the season was Macbeth, maybe not the easiest of Shakespeare's plays to visit. The play was set in the present day, so the actors wore garments that you might see walking down the street, although maybe not in that small town.

The acting was good too, but it was a lot of hard work to follow their dialog. I think I only understood about half of what they were saying.

Preparing for our evening out, we had read a synopsis of the play to refresh our memories about what happens in the play about ambition run amuk.

We talked about the play on the drive home, so that in itself is good. All told, we decided that the season tickets were a good idea for several reasons including that the small theater is beautiful and comfortable, we have aisle seats and it's close to home with easy parking.
Last night, as part of my nutrition class at our local grocery store, we spent some time walking around the perimeter of the store. This is essentially where we should be doing the majority of our shopping. Here's where you find the vegetables, fruit, whole foods, lean fish and meats, and low fat dairy products.

After we had worked our way around the building, we went to the "inside" aisles of the store to visit the pasta section where I learned about a new product that sounds like something I should try.

Two hummingbirds fight over nectar at a backyard feeder.

This is not a great photo but it does show a little of what we have been witnessing on our backyard deck for the past couple of weeks.

Two to three hummingbirds at a time will try to get to the red nectar feeder to eat. But no matter which one is eating, the other one or two will fly it off, which looks sort of like aerial dog fighting.

No one is getting any calories -- or rest -- here.

Since we were having our deck cleaned last weekend, I had to move the feeder from its regular place. I hung it from the upper deck and was happy to see that the birds found it. But the fighting didn't stop then either.

So, just like a parent of two children, I thought we could get another small feeder and see if the hummers could each have one -- or most of one -- that they will leave each other alone.

Naw, that didn't happen either. They are still fighting, but now have two places to mount their attacks. One bird is so territorial it just sits on top of the wrought iron hanger holding the feeder for minutes at a time. Whoever said humingbirds don't stay still long hasn't met this guy.

I know we are nearing the time when the birds will begin their migration south. I worry that they will not have built up their bodies enough for the long trip since they are interrupting each other at the feeders all day long. Nature usually finds a way, so I am hopeful they will all be OK for their trip. I hate the thought of them leaving for months. Even when they fight they are still magical to watch.
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">I took care
of my mother for the past ten years. I quit my job over three and a half years
ago to take care of her full time. I never considered myself a hero or super
son for doing so. It was just something that I knew I had to do, and it just
felt right. We had many ups and downs over the years, but all in all we had a
good time.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">When my
mother died this past June I had some time to reflect on certain things. I did
everything myself, and I made some mistakes along the way, but I was a quick
learner. The one thing about me was that I was never shy in asking
knowledgeable people advice on how best to take care of her. The one affliction
that bothered my mother the most was dementia. It is a truly horrible disease that
attacked her memories and thus stole a piece of her soul. Through talking to
people I was able to get a grasp on how this disease affected her. This
knowledge helped me understand what she was going through.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">On the other
hand, my mother helped me, too. I wasn’t aware of this till after she died. In
taking care of someone with a myriad of afflictions one has to learn extreme
patience and kindness. This is especially so when dealing with someone with
dementia. After years of taking care of her I believe I have become a better
person. Of all the wonderful things she has done for me over the many years
this is probably her greatest gift.
